Maya Organic is a livelihood development Initiative that helps micro-entrepreneurs build a network of sustainable enterprises that makes impeccable quality products by collaborating and partnering with umbrella structures to manage supply, product development, design and marketing. Maya Organic aims to create wealth and build capabilities of poor informal sector workers and their families.
Maya Organic is a member of IFAT (international fair trade association)
The products are simply wonderful - well designed, organic, truly unique and GENUINELY fair trade - here’s why.
-
-high quality and handmade by very skilled (male and female) artisans working from one village in southern India.
-
-beautiful earthy colours - lac resin is coloured with vegetable dyes like turmeric and indigo so no paints are used. The lovely shine is achieved by polishing the pieces with a palm leaf. Traditional methods preserved alongside contemporary designs.
-
-safety - Maya have recently had the toy range tested to meet USA standards as well as meeting EN71 regulations. They continue to modify and improve the designs as and when new regulations are introduced.
-
-sustainable wood is used - hale wood is the wood of choice for the artisans. It’s a small tree found mainly on the edge of scrubland areas in India. Only the branches are used and grow back within 3-4 years. Rubberwood is also used.
-
-the artisans receive all profits after raw materials etc are paid for. No children make the toys and Maya Organic have been actively involved in over 35,000 (!) schools across Karnataka. Maya realised the importance of ensuring that parents have livelihoods to ensure that they can send their children to school and as a result, set up various co-operatives. Visit www.mayaorganic.com and see what an amazing company they are.
